According to the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. Many of the prescriptions drugs that are abused are obtained from family and friends, and often are taken from the medicine cabinet at home. It is advised to not dispose of medications by flushing them down the toilet due to environmental contamination, or into the trash due to the high risk of being abused and misused. That is why it is important to properly dispose of medications by utilizing a local takeback program.

The Montgomery County Harm Reduction Coalition participates in the DEA’s bi-annual Prescription Drug Takeback events held on the last Saturday in the months of April and October. Due to the large amount of medications that are collected, the Crawfordsville Police Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department have 24/7 drop off locations in their front lobbies. Both Crawfordsville CVS stores have a take back program strictly for prescription drugs.
